The polar expedition of the airship Italia in 1928 had worldwide resonance for the propaganda action promoted by Maffio Maffii’s Corriere della sera at the time of its departure, then for the international scandal that followed its tragic end. After the Second World War, Umberto Nobile’s popularizing and polemical work kept interest in the enterprise alive, however transforming it into a political battleground against fascism in support of Soviet communism. The book recovers the truth of the facts and denies the most widespread reconstructions through the analysis of archival sources never before brought to light. Unpublished background stories such as those of the rescue expedition of the icebreaker Krassin are thus revealed.
